Sandy Dukat was born with proximal femoral focal deficiency. When she was four years old, her leg was amputated above the knee. It was not until she moved to Chicago in 1996 that she became involved in Disabled Swimming through the Rehab Institute of Chicago.

Among her accomplishments are setting an American Swimming Record in the 800m freestyle in 1998, winning 2 bronze medals in skiing at the Paralympics in Salt Lake City in 2002, and 3 bronze medals in skiing at the World Championships in Wildschonau, Austria in 2003. In 2005 Sandy won her first gold medal at the North American World Cup. Sandy continued to demonstrate her strength and ability as she won the slalom bronze medal at the 2006 Paralympics in Torino, Italy and finished top ten in three other competitions. In addition to these wins, she had several top five finishes and a bronze medal in the giant slalom at the 2006 World Cup races in Korea and Japan.

Sandy is a multi-sport athlete who has excelled in swimming, skiing, running, cycling and triathlons. Since she currently lives in the Rocky Mountains her latest athletic endeavor has become rock climbing

Sandy continues to train with the U.S. Disabled Ski Team with plans to compete at the World Championships in 2007, and she aspires to run a half Ironman as well as the Chicago marathon some day. When she is not competing she works as a motivational and inspirational speaker
