Sports: Cycling, Swimming, Triathlon Shlomo Nimrodi is an above the knee amputee who was injured while serving as a lieutenant in an elite commando unit the Israeli Defense Forces. In 1978 during activity in Southern Lebanon, Shlomo's unit was involved in a battle with a group of terrorists from the P.L.O. During this battle, Shlomo lost his left leg above knee and suffered multiple injuries to his upper body. As a result of his injuries, he could not continue with most of the physical and sports activities he enjoyed. He started training as a swimmer, and after six months he joined the Israeli handicap swimming team. About a year later, Shlomo was invited to join a German ski club where he acquired his skiing skills and became a ski instructor for amputees. Since then, he has gone skiing every year in Europe and the United States. His goal of running, however, was still a far away dream! In 2005, Shlomo began riding road bikes. Soon enough, he decided to train for a triathlon. After first trying a sprint distance in July 2005, Shlomo participated in the Westchester County Triathlon in September 2005, finishing the full distance in 3.5 hours while using a walking leg while on his crutches. In September 2006, Shlomo participated again in the Westchester County Triathlon where he met fellow Team A Step Ahead triathlete Ray Viscome. Ray, who was watching Shlomo's struggle with a running leg, approached him and told him that he ought to try A Step Ahead. He did, and for the first time in twenty-eight years, Shlomo was able to run again. In 2007, Shlomo was able to participate in four events including three Olympic-distance triathlons and has continued to compete in triathlons up through the 2009 NYC Triathlon. He is currently planning to participate in multiple bike-riding races around the world. Since joining Team A Step Ahead, Shlomo has taken up the mission of bringing athletic tools and abilities to Israeli war amputees and has been making much progress with the help of A Step Ahead.
Shlomo is married with three children. Born and raised in Israel, he moved to the United States with his family in 1996 as part of his involvement as a business executive in the Israeli high-tech industry. In 2006, Shlomo and his family became US citizens. He has held several corporate level positions including chief financial officer, chief operating officer and CEO of international companies. More recently, Shlomo has been running his own private equity fund actively participating in managing several companies.
