Sports: Running, Cycling Triathlon Tommy Koehler is a retired New York city Police Officer who sustained injuries to his left leg during a shootout while on the job. Despite multiple surgeries it became apparent that Tommy would be more functional as an amputee. He has not only proven his ability to return to active duty which he did before resigning from the Police department, but has proven that an athlete truly can do anything he sets his mind to. After working for 6 straight weeks at ground zero after 9/11, Tommy pushed himself with minimal training to run the New York City Marathon in 2001. Running the Marathon gave Tommy the desire to really prove himself as a competitive athlete. Beginning with running road races, and progressing to running triathlons at all levels, Tommy completed the ultimate triathlon challenge in 2005, The Hawaii Ironman World Championships; he finished in a time of 13 hours and 42 minutes. Tommy was featured in the November 2006 issue of Runners World in a story about his training for the New York City Marathon which he completed in an American Record time of 3 hours and 18 minutes (Click Here for the story).
